For the first time, the Amarillo College Moore County Campus will be represented on the board of regents. Michael Running announced at a Dumas public board meeting that he will be the Moore County representative on the board. “I am humbled,” Running said. “I am excited about the opportunities. I hope I can handle the position to everybody’s satisfaction.” Running will be a non-voting member on the board along with Michael Kitten, who will represent the Mabel McDougal Hickson Memorial Campus in Hereford. The board took the action so the Moore County Campus could have input and to build on both economic and educational opportunities. The newly appointed members will start their service on the board at their first meeting Tuesday.
They will serve a four-year term on the board of regents. The board members will acknowledge campus needs. The board also is responsible for developing new ideas to improve all the campuses. One area that regents concern themselves with is work force programs. “We are always in tune with work force issues,” Running said. “This is a big part of Amarillo College.” Running said the regents are trying to create opportunities for AC students by looking at the needs in the immediate area.
One of the board’s main focuses is to establish programs for students that not only will provide promising career opportunities but will help the community thrive as a whole. Regents work on the theory that economic development and education go hand-in-hand. Running said AC is an asset that not only attracts new businesses but also changes young lives. Running will focus on the Moore County
campus needs.
Students around the campus are appreciative to have someone representing their campus.
“I think it is a great thing. Very helpful for the campus,” said general studies major Marisol Diaz
AC President Dr. Russell Lowery-Hart said AC is one of a few community colleges in Texas to extend its regents representation to branch campuses.
